Silvretta Montafon – the most sporty ski area?! What makes avid skiers' expectations of powder, adrenaline and excitement rise immeasurably, sparks even more respect and awe in me as I prepare for my trip. The feeling was personal Snowboarding But only a few (now 8) years ago. Was I really ready for the black slopes with 81% gradients, 70 free runs, timed race routes and the longest canyon run in Vorarlberg?

No, you don't have to. Because although Silvretta Montafon has it all up its sleeve and attracts winter sports junkies from all over the world, the ski area offers something for everyone. According to Adam Rees, there are more blue kilometers of cliffs in Silvretta than red and black combined. There are also plenty of winter adventures waiting to be experienced off the slopes. For example, staying the night in an igloo – right in the middle of the ski area! Or do a wine tasting at the top wine bar in Vorarlberg! As you can see, the Silvretta Montafon race can also be enjoyed – on and off the slopes.

However, there is a very special atmosphere in the southernmost Vorarlberg valley. As if excited about winter sports and being outside in the cool mountain air. An atmosphere that inspires and motivates me rather than intimidates me. The atmosphere whispers to me: “Look what else you can achieve on skis. There is still room for improvement!”

Would you like to experience this special taste for yourself? What you should not miss during your winter vacation in Silvretta Montafon and all the tips I would like to share with you in this article.

Skiing in Silvretta Montavon

The Silvretta-Montavon Ski Area is located at 2,430 meters above the 700-metre-high valley. You can reach the ski area from Schruns, Chaguns, St. Gallinkirch, Gashorn and Silbertal via seven feeder cable cars. Of the 140 km of slopes, 60 are blue, 45 are red and 8 are black. Seven of these black slopes belong to the so-called Black Scorpions – slopes for professionals – some of which have grades of up to 81 percent! The longest valley previously mentioned in Vorarlberg, Hochjoch-Totale, runs from the highest point of the ski area, Alpilagrat, with an elevation difference of more than 1,700 meters down the valley to Schruns.

Should I tell you something: I personally have never encountered scorpions nor Hochjoch Totally. And I still had a great day skiing on the remaining (blue and red) slopes of over 100 km. Because if there's one thing I've learned from skiing (and in general), it's that a good day of skiing doesn't depend on any superlatives or tests of courage – at least not for me! Instead, I'm interested in being outside, the impressive panoramic view and the feeling of happiness that a wide, empty corridor in front of me evokes in me. And everyone finds it at their own difficulty level, right?

A topic I would like to address myself in the future. And most importantly, of course: thanks to modern snowmaking systems, among other things, the ski season in Montafon usually extends from the end of November to the end of April.

Early risers beware: skiing at sunrise at Silvretta-Montavon

Speaking of empty slopes: If, like me, you love the feeling of empty slopes and untracked paths, then you should take part in a sunrise trek at least once during your winter vacation in Silvretta-Montavon. This will be on Fridays Nova exclusively With a starting point at the Versettla railway line in Gaschurn. At 7:20 a.m. we take the cable car to the ski area, while the sky announces the imminent sunrise with hues of pale pink and violet. After hot tea in the gondola and a short warm-up session, small groups of different ability levels head down the fresh slopes with experienced guides. And up. And retreat. etc. Afterwards, a delicious mountain breakfast (with many vegetarian options) awaits you at Nova Stoba. Cost: 39 euros (plus ski pass)

By the way: The same experience is offered every Wednesday by St. Gallenkirch or Grasjoch-Bahn under the name Hochjoch Total progress. (Cost: also 39 euros plus ski pass)

Another tip: Early risers who are only interested in pure skiing on new slopes can take the Zamang cable car near Chaguns with a regular ski pass on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to Kappel, then continue to Mount Panorama Baan and the first stops. At no additional cost snow driving trails. Landl Fruah Sport is the name of a show aimed primarily at locals who want to avoid the hustle and bustle of a weekend on the slopes.

Wine tasting at an altitude of over 2000 metres

If you want to combine adventure with fun, you should end your skiing day with a wine tasting at VINNOVA. The wine bar is located more than 2,000 meters above sea level, making it the highest wine bar in Vorarlberg. While the fun of the cottage rages outside, you can sit on the panoramic terrace with lounge music and taste your way through a selection of wines that correspond to a “wine journey” with three different main themes: you can choose from indigenous grape varieties, wine classics from Austria and wines with acidity Least on the table. There are also Alpine tapas and, if desired, a vegetarian option.

The wine tour is led by a wine expert who has a lot of interesting information about the individual wines. Finally, there is the coffee known as Portafilter coffee, which is also known among ski instructors as the best coffee in the ski area. And it was really needed. I don't need to mention that after wine tasting you should take the gondola instead of skiing to the valley, right?

Igloo Adventure Night and Igloo Glamping

Do you spend a night at an altitude of more than 2000 meters in winter? In an igloo? Of course, I couldn't miss this adventure, the Igloo Night or Igloo Glamping Adventure, on my trip to Silvretta Montafon. It starts around 4:30pm at Valisera Hüsli, where the igloo group fortifies themselves with a delicious cheese fondue and a glass (or two) of white wine. As we step outside into this (not all) cold night, we each receive a torch in our hands. It then takes about 20 minutes to walk up the mountain to the igloo located at Schwarzköpfle. When we get there, the fire is already burning in front of the igloo.

After a quick inspection of the room, we immediately sit down on one of the cozy beanbags by the fireplace and enjoy a cup of Wilde Hilde, a type of ginger tea with whisky. Hours pass as we warm ourselves by the fire and exchange stories about the igloo, our travels, and our experiences. I'm lucky that the group was very small that day with 6 people and we get along right away. But there is still something special waiting for us: the iglo village recently has a sauna where we can warm up properly before going to bed. Around midnight we all slip into the thick sleeping bag in one of the igloo rooms or under the blanket in the temperature-controlled wooden igloo. Since I had already spent the night in an igloo in Sweden, I opted for the deluxe option and quickly fell into a deep sleep.

In the morning, I could no longer look out of my small wooden window because of the falling snow. The snow we've wanted so much the past few days and which the igloo and surrounding ski area so urgently needs is finally here. Instead of sunrise, which I was lucky enough to experience the day before, thick clouds hang over the mountains. We quickly dressed and set off on foot back to Valisera Hüsli, where a delicious mountain breakfast was already waiting for us. Then you have to either climb on skis or take a gondola into the valley.

Hotel tip: Sporthotel Silvretta Montafon

During my Silvretta Montafon trip I stayed in the town of Gaschurn Sporthotel Silvretta Montafon user. The four-star hotel has 86 rooms in six categories and 21 chalets with different furnishings. What they have in common is simple, typical Alpine charm with lots of warm wood tones and mountain illustrations on the wall. Even the glass wall between the living room and the bathtub in our room could be made opaque with a roller blind with a panoramic mountain view.

Obviously the highlight of the hotel, in addition to the delicious regional food as part of half board (also vegetarian on request!), is the Golden Spa. This not only consists of an indoor pool, several saunas and infrared cabins. No, the so-called hot bath is unique, as it is a relaxation room and a warm sauna for the body at the same time. It is intended for relaxation with its gentle radiant heat, improving blood flow in the vessels, purifying the body and removing toxins from it.
